[NM] OT: Anybody working with musical Linux applications? need opinions

Hi,
sorry for the out topic..but its not much going on lately and  
actually the list was in the past a not to bad place for out topics  
that require a deeper knowledge in  modern sound synthesis.

I heard about people using Linux in the past but i just stumbled over  
a page with lots of interesting pretty scientiv applications done by  
Linux users...

I wonder what rank this Linux comunity has within the world of  
computer aided sound production.

Is it like a small group that trys to have some apps under theire  
operating system..or is it rather a the science based high end scene  
that uses it?

Has anybody worked with linux as platform for sound modifications and  
research?

Can linux applikations run within other operating systems like os x?

IS it practical to try it out ? or are there bigger problems to get  
it running with your interfaces ?

I would like to get a view more hints to make my opinion if its worth  
trying or not...
