This might have to do with the actual form of the joystick used. E.g. on an
EMS Putney the joystick can actually reach the four diagonal corners,
meaning there is a square field to move the stick in. Other joysticks have a
round field and one might want unmixed waveforms at the top/down/left/right
extremes instead of in the diagonal corners.
